Upgraded Resource RoomThe Vieux Fort Primary School in the south of St. Lucia now boasts a fully refurbished resource room, thanks to Massy Stores St. Lucia’s Unity in Community Programme. The Unity in Community (UIC) Programme is a one through which Massy Stores provides financial resources and volunteer support to various social development projects.

The resource room refurbishment included repairs to the roofing of the existing facility, repainting of the ceiling, construction of book shelves and repainting and sprucing up of the room. During the Easter vacation several of Massy Stores volunteers joined the school’s administration in painting the room and getting the facility ready. A two piece couch and other soft furnishings from Massy Stores home were also donated to lift the overall ambience of the resource room.

During a special assembly to unveil the resource room, the Principal commended Massy Stores for its focus on youth and community development in St. Lucia. He explained that a survey and home visits conducted by the school to ascertain whether students had access to books and other basic resources at home, highlighted that the majority of students relied on the resources of the school for reading. As such the upgrade was one of the school’s top priorities for this academic year.

“Thanks to the invaluable support of Massy Stores we have been able to achieve one of our major goals. This gift is timely as we observe May as Massy Stores Teamreading month. We know that this upgraded resource room will benefit the school and community, now and in the long term, and we expect to realize an improvement in the performance of students in literacy at the school district and national level” he added.

The overall refurbishment cost EC $7,500 and was funded primarily by Massy Stores, with a local church contributing just under EC $1000.00. Kacius Toutouyoute, Massy Stores Assistant Manager attended with some of his team members.

He addressed the unveiling ceremony noting “This school is one that is very dear to our stores in the south. We welcomed the opportunity to use our financial resources, as well our skills, time and talents to help enhance the overall teaching, learning and reading atmosphere. It was also a good feeling to collaborate with one of the local churches in the area to make a meaningful difference in this community.”

This is the second Massy Stores Unity in Community project for this year. In February a team of volunteers gave a face lift to the Dunnotar School, a special needs institution in the north of the island which caters to children and young adults with developmental challenges.

The Massy Stores Unity in Community Programme is founded on the principles of volunteerism, social and community development, by working with charitable and non-profit organisations.
