Eight young persons who excelled at this year’s Common Entrance Examinations will receive financial and other support over the next five years, as part of the Massy Stores Scholarship and Grants Programme. Through this initiative, the students receive support in a range of areas including the purchase of uniforms, books and other school supplies. They also benefit from workshops to prepare them for secondary school.

The Scholarship and Grants Programme is built on the Massy Stores Associate Promise, which is a company pledge to reward, recognise and encourage team members in various ways. The eight awardees (three scholarships and five grants) were recognised during a ceremony at the Company’s headquarters on Friday August 25th, 2017.

Managing Director of Massy Stores (SLU) Ltd. Martin Dorville says this initiative recognizes employees by celebrating the outstanding achievements of their children.

“The Massy Stores Scholarship programme is a significant but very important investment by the company. While this is a direct benefit to your parents, both of you reap the rewards. Your parents won’t have to worry about the financial aspect of your education and can now focus on other equally important aspects of your academic life, so that you can continue to do exceptionally well,” he said.

Marketing Manager at Massy Stores SLU Ltd Sancha Raggie was the ceremony’s guest speaker. She urged the students to embrace the opportunities to not only excel academically, but participate in clubs and activities that help boost volunteerism, leadership and self-esteem.

Firstly, academics are very important, so you have to give the time to your studies,” she said, adding, “secondly participation in extracurricular activities will go a long way toward enhancing your self-development. There is Red Cross, Peer Helpers, sports and many other activities that will help you build your social skills, self-esteem, stay healthy and contribute to your personal growth and development.”

The gathering also received some words of encouragement and advice from someone who has walked this path before. Former awardee Claire Marissa Smart who is currently an Intern with Massy Stores told the young scholars that the Massy Scholarship and Grants Programme would be a truly life-changing initiative for both recipients and their families.

“Continue to work hard, stay focussed and always remember to have fun, while still working diligently to uphold your scholarships. Take it from me, as a past scholarship holder, it doesn’t only help you, it also helps your parents save money and time,” she said.

Close to 100 students have benefited from the programme since its inception in 2004.
